Sammaritano makes recommendations for pregnant women with rheumatologic disease

Lisa R. Sammaritano, MD, rheumatologist at Hospital for Special Surgery, reviewed the risks of pregnancy in women with rheumatic disease at the Congress of Clinical Rheumatology Annual Meeting, according to Healio Rheumatology.

For patients with rheumatoid arthritis, Dr. Sammaritano said "overall, the RA outcome is similar to that of the general population" and advised rheumatologists to "assess for C-spine stability and hip range of motion before delivery."

Dr. Sammaritano reviewed risks for patients with myositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren's syndrome and more. She continued advising rheumatologists to "counsel couples about the patient’s risk according to disease damage, activity, medications and autoantibody status."
