Disseminated intravascular coagulation linked to increased hospital deaths in Still's disease

HSS rheumatologist Bella Mehta, MBBS, MD, found that in-hospital deaths among patients with adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) are higher in patients with Asian ethnicity and disseminated intravascular coagulation, Healio Rheumatology reported.

Dr. Mehta presented her research findings at the 2018 North American Young Rheumatology Investigator Forum in Destin, Florida.

"There is a lack of robust epidemiological data on AOSD due to its rarity, with an estimated incidence of 0.16 to 0.4 per 100,000 patients…. There are no large-scale studies of this in the United States," said Dr. Mehta.

"This is the first large-scale study in the United States to report epidemiological outcomes of Still's disease, and it is the largest," she added.

Study data concluded that patients of Asian ethnicity had 6.4 times the risk of inpatient death and patients with intravascular coagulation concurrent had 30 times the risk.
