Angels Star Shohei Ohtani Is Avoiding Tommy John Surgery ... For Now

Forbes featured a bylined article by HSS sports medicine surgeon Joshua S. Dines, MD, about Los Angeles Angels' Shohei Ohtani's recent ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury.                                          

Dr. Dines, who did not treat Ohtani, wrote "the UCL is the main ligament on the medial (inner) aspect of the elbow, and it provides the main resistance to the stresses the elbow is exposed to during throwing. Injuries to the UCL are happening with alarming frequency, likely due in part to how hard pitchers are throwing these days."

Prior to surgery, Dr. Dines pointed out that treatment options typically include rest, PRP and biologics injections.
