The Fashion Spot looks at preventative measures to take and ways to treat swollen feet. According to Rock Positano, DPM, MSc, MPH, director of the Non-surgical Foot and Ankle service at HSS, the most common causes are either related to current health conditions or caused by irritants like too-tight shoes or long plane rides.
For chronic swelling, Dr. Positano recommends ice and calf massages.
He also stresses the importance of wearing comfortable shoes and recommends shopping for shoes in late afternoon. "During the morning hours, the foot is most slender and generally a smaller size," he adds.
Adults should measure their feet every few years as "weight gain or loss, pregnancy, increased or decreased activity can affect shoe size".
