Inside The Hospital For Special Surgery’s Global Sponsorship Strategy

ESP Sponsorship Report interviewed Emil Calcano, chief, Global Sports Marketing and Business Development at HSS, about the Hospital’s sponsorship strategy to showcase medical expertise and secure new business from professional athletes, collegiate athletes and weekend warriors.

According to the article, HSS places more focus than other hospitals on international markets such as the Dominican Republic, Peru and Panama.

"We’re having more conversations with national and international properties that can deliver outside New York City," said Calcano.

The article reported that HSS saw nearly 350 patients from the Dominican Republic in 2017, with more than 100 coming to HSS for surgery. The sponsored properties from the Dominican Republic include the Leones del Escogido baseball team and the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto (LNB) basketball league.

Calcano noted that sponsorships have helped drive a roughly 400 percent increase in business in the country over the past five years.

"Many hospitals use sports to amplify their message. We do it differently. We’re the official hospital and day-to-day medical provider," added Calcano.
