Guidelines currently recommended for postsurgical total hip replacement recovery may not benefit low-risk patients.

Researchers retrospectively examined all patients undergoing a posterior primary uncemented total hip replacement between January 2014 to June 2016 at HSS. 

Eliminating guidelines did not increase the risk of hip dislocation for the low risk population. "The majority of patients we see are low risk; 90 percent of patients probably qualify for minimized precautions," said Peter K. Sculco, MD, the study's lead author and an orthopedic surgeon at HSS.
