HSS Rheumatologist among Newest National Academy of Medicine Members

The Rheumatologist features awards, appointments and announcements for January 2017 and includes Jane E. Salmon, MD, rheumatologist at HSS, and her recent appointment to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM).

Dr. Salmon tells The Rheumatologist that she was humbled and gratified that NAM values translational work in her field of research, which focuses on mechanisms of organ damage in rheumatic diseases (specifically pregnancy among lupus patients).

"Not enough is known about what causes problems in pregnancy, and less is known about how to prevent them. Lupus affects predominantly women, and they want to know if pregnancy is safe and if we can intervene if they get into trouble. We must find answers to these questions."
