Spinal fusions safe in the outpatient setting, study finds: 3 details

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusions (ACDF) are safe in the outpatient setting for properly selected patients, according to new HSS study presented at the AAOS Annual Meeting.

Researchers studied patients who had outpatient surgery, as well as patients who had a hospital stay. Early outcomes were compared between the inpatient and outpatient groups.

"In our study, the surgical setting did not impact patient-reported outcomes. The results suggest that multi-level ACDF can be performed safely in the outpatient setting without an increased risk of complications in appropriately selected patients," said HSS surgeon Sheeraz Qureshi, MD,MBA.
