The Doctors Weighs In featured a bylined article by HSS rheumatologist Theodore R. Fields, MD, FACP, about gout management.

"Although diet is important in gout, the real cause lies in urate itself and in a person’s genetic tendency to gout," wrote Dr. Fields.

Having two or more gout attacks per year means that it’s time for a treatment change, he noted.

To reduce the number of flares, Dr. Fields recommended staying hydrated, maintaining a healthy weight and reducing alcohol intake.
