Dr. Roberts, who did not treat Jackson, explained that the two ligaments on the outside of the ankle are the most injured on the human body.
"The function of ligaments is to keep bones connected to one another so if they’re stretched out or torn, it’s not going to provide that kind of rope-like effect that when you normally rotate your foot, it doesn’t feel like it’s going to give way," said Dr. Roberts.
According to the article, typically athletes who suffer an ankle sprain will be tested for stability by hopping on one foot.
"If they can’t do that, they certainly can’t play so you would want them to have that kind of balance and dexterity so that they don’t re-injure so easily," noted Dr. Roberts.
