Enter into running season gradually, with the right shoe

The Boston Globe featured HSS foot and ankle surgeon Anne Holland Johnson, MD, in an article about how to select a proper running shoe.

Dr. Johnson explained that people could avoid many foot and ankle problems by making sure their footwear matches their activity.

As a rule of thumb, she said "if a shoe or sandal is comfortable, then it's good for your feet. If it doesn't feel right, then it's not."

Additionally, Dr. Johnson recommending getting your feet measured each time you buy a new pair of running shoes. "And don't go on the shoe's size alone — make sure you have enough room in the toe box and on the sides," she noted.
