In an article by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, HSS neurologist Erin E. Manning, MD spoke about the recent concussions suffered by Atlanta Falcons' Devonta Freeman and Desmond Trufant.
Dr. Manning, who did not treat Freeman and Trufant, explained that "the interesting thing about concussions is that you don’t have to have a direct head injury to get a concussion." She added that a neck injury, like whiplash, could cause a concussion as well.
Although there isn’t a clear way to prevent concussions in contact sports, Dr. Manning recommended avoiding tackles where you lead with your head. "Proper tackling techniques can really help to avoid some of those head injuries."
