Ailing Mets' Chances Carted Away

Jerry Manuel sat alone at the far edge of the Mets’ dugout, his arms folded, his lips pursed, his gaze fixed on a door beside the right-field foul pole at Turner Field. A cart had just traveled through that door, whisking away a writhing Fernando Nieve to the disabled list, where he will soon join eight of his teammates.

Nieve was to fly with the Mets to Washington on Sunday night and continue on to New York for a magnetic resonance imaging exam. At this rate, Hospital for Special Surgery may soon surpass the Empire State Building as the city’s most popular destination.
