Preparing Your Home

Making simple changes in your home before surgery can make your recovery easier. For the first several weeks after surgery, avoid reaching overhead. Before you come into the hospital, prepare your home by placing commonly used items on lower shelves or on counter tops during your recovery period.

Some helpful hints: Organize your home surroundings so things are easily accessible, like cookware.

Dressing: Put your operative arm in the sleeve first when you get dressed. When getting undressed, take your operative arm out last. Loose fitting, button-down shirts are recommended.

Food Preparation: If possible, make arrangements before your surgery as lifting with your operated arm is not recommended. Avoid opening tight jars/containers.
