Guidelines for Fellowship Training

Recognizing the growing interest in advanced regional anesthesia training, Dr. Gregory Liguori, Dr. James Beckman, and Mary Hargett, Administrative Director of Education in the Department of Anesthesiology, initiated a project in 2001 to establish a core curriculum for all regional anesthesia fellowships programs.

They created a template defining guidelines for regional anesthesia fellowships and distributed the template to regional anesthesia program directors, identified from the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA). All program directors were asked to submit materials from their institutions and to provide input on the guidelines. Several program directors' meetings were held, and material was imported into these guidelines from a number of institutions. The first version of these guidelines were published in the May/June 2005 edition of the journal, Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.

Since the project launched in 2001, more regional anesthesia and acute pain management training programs have been developed, and more program directors have joined the group. Members continue to meet semi-annually to work collaboratively on initiatives aimed to enhance regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine training experience.

In 2011, this group of Fellowship Directors marked its first decade, and published the second edition of the guidelines in the May-June 2011 issue of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.

In 2014, this same group reviewed and updated the guidelines for the third time. The third version was published in the May-June 2015 issues of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, titled Guidelines for Fellowship Training in Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine - Third Edition, 2014.
