ALS Program at HSS Receives Regional and National Recognition

On May 7, 2016, Dale J. Lange, M.D., chairman of the Department of Neurology and director and the ALS Program at HSS, received a distinctive award at the annual ALS Association Greater New York Chapter's "Walk to Defeat ALS" in Manhattan.

Dr. Lange and his team treat patients with complex neuromuscular diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), weekly at the Department of Neurology. Dr. Lange’s team is comprised of unique multi-disciplinary members, including neurologists, a neuromuscular fellow, a nurse practitioner, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, research coordinators and respiratory therapists.

During the event, the award was presented by Dorine Gordon, president and CEO of the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter, who recognized HSS as being “one of New York's premiere treatment centers” for ALS. She stated that “under the expert direction of Dr. Dale Lange, leading a skilled and compassionate team of ALS healthcare professionals, Hospital for Special Surgery provides hope to people with ALS by playing a vital role in the pipeline to find a treatment and cure.”

HSS has met all national standards of best practice care in the management of ALS. After successfully completing a comprehensive site review, the ALS Association designated HSS an ALS Certified Center of Excellence – one of only 49 recognized centers in the country.
