Kenneth Herbst is an advanced practice wound care specialist at Hospital for Special Surgery. He is the Chair of the Skin Integrity Committee and guides members of the interdisciplinary team providing comprehensive wound evaluation and management. His previous roles have been with NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Internal Medicine Associates (WCIMA) where he received the 2013 WCIMA Excellence award in provider category. Ken has worked as a home health aide, registered nurse in oncology, and adult nurse practitioner in internal medicine from 2011 - 2017. He contributed to the internal medicine residency curriculum at WCIMA by holding wound care seminars and precepting geriatric fellows. Ken contributed to the Diabetes Improvement Committee at WCIMA and was an organizing member for the Program for Advanced Limb Preservation at Weill Cornell Medical College.
Ken holds a personal interest in skin and wound care, using a patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach with an emphasis on prevention of skin injury and maintaining skin integrity through patient education. He is involved with the development, processing, and implementation of evidence-based wound care standards and guidelines at HSS. Ken is developing a certification program for registered nurses to become certified as Wound Treatment Associates through the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society competency training program. Ken is also interested in creating continuing education seminars for RNs and providers. As a certified advanced practice wound care specialist, his clinical role encompasses a diagnostic evaluation and treatment plan in both hospital-based and outpatient settings.
Ken sits on the RN and NP peer review councils and is a member of the perioperative skin council. His presentation on hospital acquired skin injuries was approved by the 2019 ANCC Magnet Conference. He is a member of The American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society, and the Institute of Functional Medicine.
Ken is a graduate of health management at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He completed a BSN and MSN at Dominican College and Hunter College, respectively, and has an advanced practice wound certification through WOCN. He is board certified as an adult nurse practitioner (ANP-BC).
Ken enjoys reading and cooking. In his spare time, he is exercising, meditating, or socializing with friends.
