Nicholas Demetriou, NP
Dr. Nicholas Demetriou is a cardiac nurse practitioner at HSS. His specialty is in the area of perioperative management of implantable cardiac devices and postoperative cardiac management. He previously worked at The Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC for 11 years were he was senior lead NP on the interventional and general cardiology service. Nick has been involved in cardiac care since 2005. His first nursing job was in a cardiovascular intensive care unit. While at Mount Sinai, Nick was part of a select group of nurse practitioners that completed cardiac catheterizations. Nick helped to expand and write the hospitals perioperative ICD policy and procedure as well as serving as the sole provider of perioperative cardiac device management until the service expanded to include two NPs. Dr. Demetriou is also the inaugural Co-Chair of the Nurse Practitioner Peer Review Committee. This committee reviews and makes recommendations on the practice and system processes used in delivering quality patient care at HSS.
Nick’s academic background is a journey that extends back to 1994 when he was a CNA for individuals with MR and DD. He then graduated in 1995 as an LPN. While working overnight full time as a LPN in a nursing home, in 1997 he completed his Associate of Science in Math and Science from Adirondack Community College. He then moved to Long Island where he worked full time overnight as a LPN while attending college full time during the day. He graduated with his BSN in 2000 and in 2004, obtained his MS. Nick worked full time overnight as a RN while completing the two to three year NP program in a year and a half, graduating in 2005. In 2017, Nick obtained a DNP from Chatham University with a clinical focus on congestive heart failure. In 2018, he continued his educational journey by obtaining a MBA with a specialization in Healthcare Management from Western Governors University.
When not in school or working, Nick enjoys playing with his 200 pound Great Dane Duke and spending time with his family.
