Running produces many health benefits; unfortunately, there is a common misbelief that running can cause osteoarthritis, which may deter many individuals from running as they age. The risk of developing osteoarthritis should be identified on an individual basis and weighed against the positive health benefits of running. This program identifies biomechanical factors that contribute to both faulty running patterns and osteoarthritis and the relationship between the two. The current evidence on running and its relationship to osteoarthritis will also be examined. Strategies to mitigate the risks and optimize the benefits of running, and suggestions for the treatment and management of osteoarthritis in the runner will be provided.
This course discusses the management of various surgical and non-surgical sports medicine populations.
