Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship

The Department of Radiology and Imaging Musculoskeletal Fellowship experience includes:

  • musculoskeletal examinations performed on conventional radiographs
  • Nuclear Medicine including bone mineral densitometry
  • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound including diagnostic and interventional therapeutic procedures
  • CT scanning including QCT
  • MRI examinations including MR Angiographs and Teleradiology
  • interventional musculoskeletal spinal procedures including myelograms and discograms
  • image guided (CT, fluro, ultrasound) tissue sampling, e.g., cyst aspiration and bone biopsies

The Department includes a Center for Musculoskeletal MRI which performs approximately 21,000 Musculoskeletal MRI examinations of the axial and appendicular skeleton annually. There are seven high field strength units including 1.5T, 0.7T open and 3T units. All systems have state of the art gradient performance. HSS serves as a General Electric test site with continual testing of prototype pulse sequences and surface coils that are not commercially available. MR examinations include MR Angiography (used in the setting of orthopaedic trauma), detection of thrombi in post arthroplasty patients, as well as extensive arterial assessment for free tissue transfer.

The Department also includes a Center for Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine. The fellowship provides extensive exposure to Musculoskeletal Ultrasound with expertise for diagnostic and therapeutic guided injections. Over 11,000 musculoskeletal US cases are performed annually. HSS is also a test site for Ultrasound contrast and equipment. The US Academic Center will house an Ultrasound library of basic, complex and interesting cases and an observation room for witnessing cases performed in real time.

Fellows have opportunities to attend, participate and conduct radiology, orthopaedic, rheumatology, physiatry resident and fellow conferences at HSS, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The Robert H. Freiberger, MD Academic Center and Library contains a teaching file with examples of common, complex and esoteric musculoskeletal conditions and disorders on x-ray, CT, US, MR and Nuclear Medicine. There are ample opportunities for research and research projects(s) are an expected part of the fellowship. Salary and fringe benefits are highly competitive.
