OVERVIEWThe treatment of hip disorders is developing rapidly, and advances in diagnosis, surgical procedures and rehabilitation are integral in improving patient outcomes. Providing optimal non-operative, pre-surgical, surgical and post-surgical care is imperative to achieving the best possible outcomes. Physical therapists must have current, evidence-based knowledge and advanced skills to provide superior care to this patient population.
OBJECTIVESHSS activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the completion of the course, the participant should be able to:
- Distinguish between intra-articular, extra-articular and peri-trochanteric hip pathology, including pincer and cam impingement.
- Describe the function and mechanics of the ligaments, labrum and capsule of the hip.
- Recognize the most appropriate imaging techniques used to diagnose hip pathology.
- Identify special tests for the hip and the kinematic chain, used in differential diagnosis of hip pathology.
- Select appropriate movement screens in evaluating for hip pathology.
- Describe the precautions to be followed in Phases I-III of the rehabilitation process.
- Select appropriate manual and neuromuscular re-education techniques for safe and efficient treatment of this patient population.
ACCREDITATIONHospital for Special Surgery is a New York State Education Department approved provider for physical therapy continuing education. Hospital for Special Surgery designates this activity for a maximum of 19 Contact Hours on-site and 14 Contact Hours online. This activity is pending approval in New Jersey and Florida.
