STATEMENT OF NEEDProviding and receiving appropriate and effective pain management continues to be a challenge for both the patient and the provider. Despite great strides in discerning fundamental physiologic constructs of pain, health care disparities, lack of understanding of treatment options, and social stigmas continue to be obstacles to care. The bridge to developing workable care models for the patient in pain begins with acknowledging these issues. This course will bring together a multidisciplinary team who will outline and discuss a variety of topics which directly impact the delivery of care for the patient in pain.
OBJECTIVESHospital for Special Surgery professional education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care. At the conclusion of this course, the participant should be able to:
- Identify the challenges inherent in treating patients in the setting of a poly-pharmacy history.
- Discuss the interventions for treating chronic pain patients with a substance use history.
- Describe the implications of disparate care for the patient in pain.
