OVERVIEWMore than 30 million children participate in sports in the U.S., and every year over 3.5 million receive medical treatment for a variety of sports-related injuries and conditions, such as concussions, ACL injuries and skin infections. Because of the many medical and orthopaedic issues that these young athletes face, the clinicians managing their care need to know “best practices” in medical team communication and how to treat young athletes for certain medical and orthopaedic conditions.
OBJECTIVESHSS activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of this course participants will be able to:
- Identify the best communication practices between those involved in caring for the young athlete (i.e., athlete, parent, coach, trainer, therapist, radiologist, teammate) and be able to implement them in their own practice.
- Demonstrate proper ankle taping techniques.
- Describe the standards of evidence-based practice and prevention for ACL injuries and demonstrate practice-based learning.
- Explain the standard practices of treatment and diagnosis of concussions, such as cognitive testing in high risk sports, and implement them in their own practice.
- Recognize the common medical issues, such as skin infections, hydration/nutrition and returning to play, that are faced by young athletes and be able to manage these issues.
