OVERVIEWCollegiate and professional soccer leagues rely upon their medical teams to treat soccer-related injuries and return injured players to the game. This activity will provide medical teams with guidance on the identification, prevention and treatment of injuries common to soccer athletes, such as injuries to the foot and ankle, soft tissue injuries about the pelvis and hamstring, the use of adjuvant treatments like orthobiologics and accelerated physical therapy, and discussion of life-threatening injuries such as concussion and cardiac abnormalities, which may prevent or delay players from entering or returning to the game.
OBJECTIVESHSS activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Screen players at risk for common soccer-related injuries such as ankle injuries (peroneal tendon tears, subluxating tendons, cavus feet).
- Describe the mechanisms of ankle injuries and implement methods to prevent repeat injuries and initiate treatment plans to return players to play as appropriate.
- Implement the most current MLS protocols for treating concussions in professional soccer athletes.
- Learn on-the-field strategies and return-to-play treatments and strategies to grow their foundation of knowledge of brain injuries.
- Identify and treat cardiac abnormalities in order to appropriately give clearance to soccer athletes and learn life-saving strategies to reduce the worldwide incidence of sudden cardiac death in soccer.
- Diagnose and implement treatment plans for extra-articular hip injuries common in soccer athletes.
- Explain when to treat athletes with postural and biomechanical rehabilitation with a goal of returning them to play and preventing future problems.
