About Dr. Shen

Dr. Tony Shen is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee reconstruction, including minimally invasive primary total hip and total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, and revision hip and knee replacement. He performs hip replacements through both the anterior and posterior approaches. Dr. Shen believes in tailoring treatment to each patient's unique needs and characteristics. To this end, he uses advanced techniques including robotics and computer navigation to customize each operation to each patient's unique features.

Dr. Shen earned his undergraduate degree with honors at Harvard College in Neurobiology. He earned his medical degree at Washington University School of Medicine where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery where he was given the Thomas P. Sculco, MD Award by the hospital staff for his dedication to team-based patient care. He then completed advanced training in hip and knee reconstruction with the Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement service at HSS. Additionally, Dr. Shen has traveled around the world to leading orthopedic centers in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Singapore, and Australia. His international experience has given him a unique perspective on the state-of-the-art for hip and knee replacement. Dr. Shen incorporates his international experience, his extensive training, as well as the latest research and technology to develop individualized treatments for all his patients.

Dr. Shen conducts research on the intersection of personalized medicine and joint replacement, rapid recovery after surgery, and the use of new technologies to improve surgical precision. He has received national and international awards for his work, which has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals and presented at conferences around the world. Dr. Shen is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS).
