Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Wednesday, November 8 for the 2023 Hospital for Special Surgery Benefit for Pediatrics at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan to support the Lerner Children’s Pavilion. It was a wonderful celebration of our HSS Children’s Champion Award recipient, Dr. Roger F. Widmann, and we proudly unveiled the newly named Penny Doerge Adaptive Academy. With more than 320 guests in attendance, the event raised over $2.2 million to support our mission of providing an unsurpassed level of care to our youngest patients. Special thanks to our incredible Benefit co-chairs Erica and Alexander Crisses, Kate Doerge, Daniel W. Green, MD, MS, Lisa S. Ipp, MD, Monica A. Keany, Lara Schwartz Lerner and Deirdre McGraw for their leadership and unwavering support of HSS Pediatrics!

Penny Doerge Adaptive Academy

The recently named Penny Doerge Adaptive Academy at HSS was established in 2014 to organize local and regional adaptive programs for kids and teens that face a range of disabilities and require the support of trained guides or equipment adaptations to safely participate in a range of activities designed for patients to realize new skills and interests, some they did not think possible, reinforce therapy goals, and encourage socialization and fun. Starting with one ski event in the first year, the Penny Doerge Academy has expanded to 12 events annually, including surfing, horseback riding, ballet, rock climbing, and more.

HSS is honored to name the Penny Doerge Adaptive Academy in memory of Penny Doerge, a long-time patient of Dr. Widmann’s, and the daughter of our co-chair, Kate Doerge, who was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis (NF1) as an infant, but never let her diagnosis hold her back. Penny lived a life full of purpose, passion, and joy, and through her actions showed countless others how to live with grace.

Penny’s resilient, positive, and courageous spirit are all qualities that the Academy works to promote in its athletes. The newly named Penny Doerge Adaptive Academy will have an expanded focus on three key themes that are central to how Penny lived her life: motion, expression, and inclusion. Penny continues to serve as an amazing inspiration to all of us at HSS.
