Pediatrics at Hospital for Special Surgery

Commitment to Caring for Kids with Musculoskeletal Conditions

Hospital for Special Surgery is a center of excellence in the care of children with orthopedic and rheumatic disorders. From infants to adolescents, our commitment to improving the lives of young people with complex musculoskeletal conditions is world renowned with more than 12,000 patient visits to HSS each year.

For HSS pediatric specialists, the many children and their families that pass through the Hospital doors every day are the heroes of healing, all with inspiring stories of pain and perseverance, struggle and triumph. Through a comprehensive approach to care, including the work of healthcare practitioners across a wide range of disciplines, pediatric specialists at HSS are able to offer high-level treatment while gaining unprecedented knowledge about the disabilities and chronic conditions that impact thousands of youngsters.

At Hospital for Special Surgery, pediatric patients benefit from the knowledge and expertise of a multidisciplinary team, including pediatric orthopedists, pediatric rheumatologists, pediatric anesthesiologists, pediatricians, radiologists, nurses, social workers, case managers, and therapists (physical, occupational, and speech).

Whether it’s the ability to play without pain or walk unassisted, HSS pediatric patients are on the move and able to enjoy an active childhood. Our numerous success stories include a toddler with skeletal dysplasia who enjoys a day at the playground as the result of a groundbreaking device to help strengthen his bones; the preschooler born with clubfeet who, with early intervention, can now run, jump, and pedal a bike with ease; a 10-year-old girl with childhood arthritis who is able to pursue her passion for dance pain free; a high school senior whose leg was saved after a terrible car crash; and a college student with cerebral palsy who is a step closer to his dream of performing on stage thanks to an innovative surgical procedure.

All of these amazing achievements and more were made possible by our collaborative team of dedicated physicians, scientists and health professionals at Hospital for Special Surgery.

The Children's Pavilion at Hospital for Special Surgery

Currently under development, the new Children’s Pavilion at Hospital for Special Surgery will provide a unique, family-centered environment to support the recovery and well-being of each child in our care.  The focal point of the new Children’s Pavilion design will be a “virtual aquarium” that welcomes families as they arrive and encourages children to engage in their physical surroundings.
