Osteoporosis Prevention Center

The first of its kind in the nation, the Osteoporosis Prevention Center at HSS was founded to help prevent and treat osteoporosis. Recognized by Congress as a model for other organizations to follow, it is the only center in New York City that is part of the New York State Osteoporosis Prevention & Education Program.

Osteoporosis is a disorder in which bones become less dense and more fragile, thereby increasing the risk of fracture. Osteoporosis is a “silent disease,” since there are no warning signs or symptoms until fractures occur. In the United States alone, an estimated 1.5 million fractures each year are attributed to low bone density. The risks of osteoporosis are not relegated exclusively to women males represent 20% of all cases.
