NFL.com—October 20, 2016

The NFL has released the 2016 Health and Safety Report, which previews what is coming under the NFL's new Play Smart. Play Safe. initiative.

Since 2012, the NFL has released an annual report highlighting the league's ongoing commitment to health and safety. This report looks at the GE/NFL Head Health Initiative (HHI) which includes utilizing state-of-the-art MRI technology to understand how mild TBI affects the brain. The study seeks to discover imaging signatures that could aid in the diagnosis, prognosis and clinical management of mild TBI.

The report notes that since 2014, the NFL has partnered with several healthcare facilities to perform clinical research on concussions, including Hospital for Special Surgery. To date, over 175 mild TBI patients have enrolled in this research study.
