Becker's Hospital Review Names 100 Hospitals With Great Orthopedic Programs

Becker's Hospital Review has published its 2013 list of "100 Hospitals With Great Orthopedic Programs," which recognizes orthopedic surgery departments, programs or dedicated centers that have earned considerable recognition.

Exceptional orthopedic departments often include physicians who provide outstanding patient care, advance cutting-edge orthopedic research and treat professional athletes. Many of the hospitals featured on this list have earned recognition for orthopedic excellence from U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades, CareChex and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

To devise this list, the Becker's editorial team weighted the aforementioned rankings and recognition and conducted research to find the following hospitals as those with great orthopedic programs.

The hospitals included in the 2013 edition of the list are:

Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City). Founded in 1863, the 205-bed Hospital for Special Surgery is the oldest orthopedic hospital in the country, and one of the more internationally prominent, as it treated patients from more than 90 countries in 2012. The hospital has long had ties to some of the country's most elite athletes, and in August, it was designated as an official hospital for U.S. Olympic athletes and teams. The hospital also boasts the lowest surgical site infection rate out of 169 providers for hip replacements in the state of New York. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital first the country for orthopedic care in 2013, the 23rd consecutive year it made the publication's top-50 ranking for the specialty.
