Clayton Kershaw says he wants to pitch again this season, but the Los Angeles Dodgers aren't banking on their injured Cy Young Award winner riding to the rescue over the season's final two weeks.
"Yeah, I'm going to try to pitch," Kershaw told USA TODAY Sports before the Dodgers' doubleheader Wednesday at Washington.
Kershaw saw hip specialist Dr. Bryan Kelly at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York on Tuesday and was told attempting to pitch through the impingement of his right hip would not subject him to further damage.
"Dr. Kelly feels that Clayton can continue to pitch if pain allows," the Dodgers said in a prepared statement. "However, Clayton will not be allowed to pitch if he continues to have hip pain."
As for Kershaw, his message remains succinct:
"It's just day-to-day, try to pitch and see how it goes," he says. "I'm just going to try."
