New York City's Hospital for Special Surgery Expands to Florida

First Rehabilitation Center Outside the New York Tri-State Area

New York—September 21, 2011

Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), a world leader in orthopedics, rheumatology and rehabilitation, today announced the establishment of HSS Spine & Sport in Jupiter, Florida. This first HSS expansion beyond the New York region is a direct response to patient and physician demand.

"Florida was a logical choice,” said Louis A. Shapiro, president and CEO of Hospital for Special Surgery. “As the number of patients who travel to New York from Florida for specialty care at HSS or split their time between homes in both regions continues to increase, HSS Spine and Sport is an ideal location for their outpatient rehabilitation.”

“Our top priority is to provide all patients and their families who come in contact with the Rehabilitation Services at HSS with the highest quality of customer service and patient care,” said JeMe Cioppa-Mosca, PT, MBA, vice president rehabilitation at HSS. “With HSS Spine and Sport, now local patients can be assured they will receive a seamless continuum of care.”

HSS Spine and Sport, which specializes in non-operative and postsurgical care, offers the best professionals in the fields of spine, orthopedics and sports rehabilitation, massage therapy and performance training.

“We are proud to bring the world class care provided by Hospital for Special Surgery to the West Palm Beach Florida region,” said Michael L. Reed, DPT, MSc, OCS, MTC, director of HSS Spine & Sport. “Our multidisciplinary team of physical therapists provide permanent Florida residents and those who come to spend the winter months access to the latest and most advanced approaches to return to and maintain an active life.”

Spine & Sport had been a member of the HSS Rehabilitation Network for three years. Established in 1994, the HSS Rehabilitation Network is a partnership between Hospital for Special Surgery and independently-owned rehabilitation centers that includes more than 128 sites within a 90-mile radius of New York City, with three sites in Florida. A center applies to join the network and is put through a rigorous review process that uses Medicare and Joint Commission standards and includes an on-site evaluation. Once accepted, the centers are revisited every 12-18 months by a site examiner, who is a an HSS physical therapist with a minimum of 10 years clinical experience, to ensure the standards are maintained.

HSS Spine & Sport is located at 600 Heritage Drive Suite 110, Abacoa Professional Center, in Jupiter, Florida.
