NEW YORK, 5:30pm, October 11, 2006 -- As a precaution, Hospital for Special Surgery evacuated the lower twelve floors of the Belaire Building this afternoon, following a fire caused by a small plane that hit an upper floor of the building.
As the Hospital facility was not in any way affected by this accident, the Hospital continues to be operational for patients and their visitors.

NEW YORK, 4:30pm, October 11, 2006 -- Doctors' offices and administrative offices in the lower 12 floors of the Belaire building that are occupied by Hospital for Special Surgery have been evacuated as a precaution after an explosion this afternoon in the upper floors of the building.
In addition, guest facilities in the building, which house family members visiting patients at the hospital, were also evacuated as a precaution.
All activities within Hospital for Special Surgery have continued without interruption.
We are monitoring the situation closely and working with emergency officials.
