Hospital for Special Surgery Department of Radiology and Imaging Expands Departmental Expertise with Three Highly Specialized Recruits
Hospital enhances neuroimaging expertise and augments ability to deliver innovative image guided treatment options including ultrasound-guided therapeutic injections for the relief of joint, tendon, and other musculoskeletal pain
New York, NY—September 6, 2005
Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) Department of Radiology and Imaging has expanded to 12 full time faculty with the addition of three new radiologists whose diverse expertise broadens the Hospital’s current radiology services and further augments existing treatment modalities. The addition of a division of neuroimaging will enable patients suffering brain or head abnormalities, nerve injuries, neurologic pain, or multiple sclerosis, to have their films taken and analyzed by an HSS radiologist with over 10 years of expertise in this area. Additionally, the new recruits will further enhance the Department’s offerings in pediatric radiology and treatment modalities including ultrasound, CT and fluoroscopic guided, therapeutic musculoskeletal injections.
“Each of these radiologists brings a unique expertise to HSS that will strengthen and diversify our radiology department,” said HSS Radiologist-in-Chief Helene Pavlov, MD, FACR. “This recruitment is part of our continual effort to expand services and provide a growing spectrum of specialized orthopedic and rheumatologic imaging at HSS. Clear and frequent communication between a patient’s rheumatologist or orthopedist and the radiologist is key to patient management.”
Despite a nationwide shortage of radiologists, HSS has been able to recruit and retain radiologists with specialized skills and interests because the department is internationally recognized as the premier center for leading edge, orthopedic, and rheumatologic clinical and research imaging.
New department radiologists include:
Sherri Birchansky, MD, Associate Attending Radiologist
After ten years of private practice in Miami, Dr. Birchansky left Florida to become a musculoskeletal MR fellow at HSS Department of Radiology and Imaging. Her goal was to develop expertise in MR and was drawn to the leadership and expertise of the department. Dr. Birchansky has board certification in diagnostic radiology, and certificate of added qualification in both pediatric radiology and neuroradiology.
Dr. Birchansky is the department’s first neuroimager. Her expertise will be especially beneficial for patients suffering from rheumatologic diseases that have neurological expressions such as lupus or multiple sclerosis.
“After my fellowship, it became clear that HSS was a perfect fit for me,” said Dr. Birchansky. “I truly value being a part of this environment because it fosters research and innovation, but most importantly excellence in patient care.”
Eric Bogner, MD, Assistant Attending Radiologist
Dr. Bogner is a board certified radiologist and recently completed a musculoskeletal imaging fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia where he focused on interventional procedures. A native of New Jersey and an alumnus of New York University, the Manhattan location of HSS, coupled with the department’s renowned reputation, made HSS a natural choice for Dr. Bogner.
“I am excited by the opportunities for collaboration and teaching that exist at HSS,” said Dr. Bogner. “Each day brings us so many interesting patient scenarios; to be involved in so many challenging cases is a unique opportunity.” HSS Department of Radiology and Imaging has one of the premiere and largest musculoskeletal radiology fellowship programs in the world. These features were a draw for Dr. Bogner, who enjoys teaching in addition to providing clinical care.
Gregory Saboeiro, MD, Assistant Attending Radiologist
A year ago, Dr. Saboeiro left a private practice in St. Louis for a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at HSS. Dr. Saboeiro is a Board Certified radiologist and has a subspecialty certificate of added qualification in vascular and interventional radiology but wanted to develop a second specialty in musculoskeletal radiology.
At HSS, Dr. Saboeiro has honed his ability to deliver ultrasound-guided injections to relieve joint pain. Ultrasound-guided injections are procedures that manage pain for many patients through the injection of medication (steroids, anesthetic, etc.) into targeted locations. Ultrasound is used to guide and pinpoint these injections, which have been proven to relieve and prevent surgery. Since his arrival as a fellow, Dr. Saboeiro has been collaborating with his HSS colleagues on a variety of research projects, some of which will be published and presented before the end of the year.
“I wanted to stay at HSS because of its well regarded musculoskeletal expertise and numerous research opportunities. Having the chance to work with a group of experts that are so committed to clinical research is incredible and I am looking forward to being a part of the many advances HSS radiologists are known for,” said Saboeiro.
