Monthly Conferences for the Healthcare Professional

Once a month, the Mary Kirkland Center for Lupus Care holds a Special Lecture which explores lupus and related disorders. Special lupus nephritis cases are presented during our semi-annual Lupus Nephritis Clinical Pathology Conference. All of these conferences take place on Fridays from 12pm – 1pm.

April 24: “Antiphospholipid Syndrome Patients Management from a Vascular Specialist Perspective.”  Denis Wahl, MD, PhD. 

March 20: “Lupus Special Lecture: State of the ART: Cutting edge advances in assisted reproductive technologies.”  David E. Reichman, MD.

February 20: “Health Disparities in Rheumatology.”  Presented by Irene Blanco, MD, MS.

January 16: “Update on the Management of Venous Thromboembolism.”  Presented by Stephane Zuily, MD, PhD.

February 26: Multidisciplinary SLE Lecture - “Lupus Nephritis from the Nephrologist's Perspective.” Dr. James Chevalier (Nephrology, New York Presbyterian Hospital).

March 26: Rheumatology/Nephrology Joint Lupus Nephritis Conference* – case presented by Dr. Suhail Hameed (Rheumatology fellow). Guest discussants: Drs. Surya Seshan (Renal Pathology, New York Presbyterian Hospital) and Miriam Chung (Nephrology, New York Presbyterian Hospital).

April 23: Multidisciplinary SLE Lecture - “Pre-Pregnancy & Contraception Counseling in SLE Patients." Dr. Shari Gelber (Obstetrics/Gynecology, New York Presbyterian Hospital).

May 28: Rheumatology/Nephrology Joint Lupus Nephritis Conference* – Presenters: Drs. Lisa Vasanth (Attending Rheumatologist, Hospital for Special Surgery) and Dr. James Chevalier (Attending Nephrologist, New York Presbyterian Hospital).

June 25: Multidisciplinary SLE Lecture - “Tales of the Ear Canal, and Other Oddities About Lupus." Dr. Michael Lockshin (Attending Rheumatologist & Director, Barbara Volcker Center for Women and Rheumatic Disease).

July 23: New Fellow Orientation on the Lupus Center; SLEDAI/BILAG training. Drs. Kyriakos Kirou and Doruk Erkan (Co-directors of the Mary Kirkland Center for Lupus Care, Hospital for Special Surgery).

August: SUMMER BREAK

September 24: Rheumatology/Nephrology Joint Lupus Nephritis Conference* – Presenter Dr. Kyriakos Kirou (Attending Rheumatologist and Clinical Co-Director of the Mary Kirkland Center for Lupus Care).

October 22: Multidisciplinary SLE Lecture - “Catastrophic Antiphospholipid Syndrome." Dr. Doruk Erkan (Assistant Attending Rheumatologist, Hospital for Special Surgery).

November 19: Lupus Case Conference - Drs. Lisa Sammaritano and Weijia Yuan, Rheumatology, Hospital for Special Surgery.

December 17: Multidisciplinary SLE Lecture - “Neuropsychiatric Aspects of Lupus." Dr. John Warren Barnhill (Psychiatry, New York Presbyterian Hospital).

*Note: The Rheumatology/Nephrology Joint Lupus Nephritis Conferences consist of Lupus Nephritis case presentations followed by renal discussions and clinical comments by rheumatology and nephrology faculty. The goals of the conferences are to educate fellows, residents, and attendings on the topic, provide a sense of “real-life” outcomes of lupus nephritis at our institution, foster collaboration between rheumatology, nephrology, and renal pathology disciplines and ultimately help improve the care of our patients. The cases are selected by Kyriakos A. Kirou, MD, DSc, FACP.
