The HSS-China Orthopaedic Education Exchange provides a unique opportunity for Chinese orthopaedic surgeons and trainees with a focus on arthroplasty to gain valuable knowledge and experience through professional education programs. Structured observation programs at Hospital for Special Surgery, participation in educational programs through live videoconferencing along with attendance at annual symposia held in China are several offerings of the Exchange. Qualified applicants from medical centers throughout China are encouraged to apply to the Junior Faculty Observation Program.

Junior Faculty Observation Program

Highlights of program include:

  • 2-month observation with the Adult Reconstruction & Joint Replacement Service
  • Observation in the operating room and outpatient clinic
  • Daily schedule based on observation preferences
  • Observation of morning rounds with HSS attending surgeons
  • Observation of patient flow and perioperative services
  • Attendance at weekly educational conferences

HSS-China Club

All alumni of the Junior Faculty Observation Program will gain lasting membership within the HSS community. Opportunities for continued involvement include:

  • Participation in HSS educational programs in New York
  • Invitation to HSS Luncheon at annual Chinese Orthopaedic Association Meeting
  • Subscription to HSS Journal

Applicant Criteria

  • At least 10 years of medical training
  • High level of English proficiency
  • Demonstrated leadership potential

Please email completed application to Allison Grande at Selected applicants will be interviewed prior to acceptance into the program. The entire selection process takes approximately three months from date of submission. Program start dates for accepted candidates are based upon availability.

e-Learning Initiatives

Hospital for Special Surgery’s Adult Reconstruction & Joint Replacement Service holds four live videoconference sessions per year with Peking University People’s Hospital and PLA General Hospital during weekly CME accredited Grand Rounds sessions. Sessions include case presentations from HSS Fellows and from China-based participants, lectures from HSS attending surgeons, and discussion. Please inquire for more information on Grand Rounds sessions and for potential future collaboration with additional medical centers.

Annual Symposia

HSS faculty members participate in symposia held at the annual Chinese Orthopaedic Association meeting and at Peking University in Beijing, China. If interested, please contact us for more information on arranging additional education conferences.
