Back and Spine Injuries and Conditions

see Scoliosis

Comprised of many different parts, the complex nature of the spine provides us with a frame that allows mobility while maintaining stability. These opposing demands are such that the spine is extremely vulnerable to injury and prone to wear and tear over the years. Back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal ailments seen by orthopedists – 80% of the population experiences some form of back pain at some point in their lives.

The spinal cord, nerves, disks, vertebrae, muscles, and ligaments in the back are susceptible to strains, sprains, fractures, dislocations, and osteoporosis. The lumbar spine (lower back) is especially at risk of pain and injury, as our mobility and strength stem from the movements made possible by its unique structure.
