Combining a Biologic Agent with Methotrexate in the Treatment of RA

Course Description

Statement of Need
Prior evaluation has looked at adding etanercept either as monotherapy or in combination with methotrexate to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who were non-responders or partial responders to methotrexate. The TEMPO study has looked at methotrexate and etanercept alone vs the combination of methotrexate and etanercept in methotrexate-naïve patients. The importance of this study to clinical rheumatologists in their day-to-day care of patients is that it is the first study to demonstrate that combination of biologics and traditional DMARD's is superior to either given as monotherapy.

Target Audience
This program is designed to educate health care professionals including Rheumatologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Radiologists, Residents, Fellows and Primary Care Physicians.

Objectives
The objective of any CME program is to improve patient care.
As a result of attending this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Increase knowledge of management options in RA, especially regarding biologic agents in combination with methotrexate
  2. Increase knowledge of the ways in which therapeutic trials in RA are designed, and the implications of each type of design, and ways to evaluate if a particular study is relevant to the patient the physician is treating.
