Anesthesiology for Professionals

2007 Department Statistics 

In 1986, Dr. Nigel Sharrock was appointed Director of the Department of Anesthesiology at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). Under Dr. Sharrock's leadership, HSS became one of the first hospitals in the country to promote the use of regional anesthesia for orthopedic surgery and pain management. Approximately 90% of all anesthetics performed at HSS utilized regional anesthesia techniques in 2007. A total of 55,886 anesthetic procedures/interventions were administered in the Department’s multiple clinical settings: the Main Operating Room, the Ambulatory Surgery Center, the Post Anesthesia Care Units, the Acute Pain Service, the Pain Medicine Division, the MRI and Radiology Suites, and the new Hand and Foot Center

2936 more anesthetic procedures were administered in the OR in 2007 then were administered in 2006, an 11% increase.
