Academic Visitor Program FAQs

Who may visit HSS?

Persons 18 years of age or older with a confirmed HSS host and a serious interest in musculoskeletal health.

What is the role of an Academic Visiting Observer?

Visiting Observers may view surgeries, patient histories, and physicals. They may also attend patient rounds and teaching conferences. Licensing laws in the United States prohibit Visiting Observers from providing patient care.

What is the role of an Academic Visiting Clinician?

Visiting Clinicians have direct and indirect patient contact as limited by the Delineation of Privileges and approved by the Medical Board.

What is the application process?

  1. Secure an invitation to observe by identifying and independently contacting physicians you are interested in observing. Please note: the Academic Visitor Program Coordinator cannot disclose the contact information of HSS staff or physicians.
  2. Have your Host Physician contact the Academic Visitor Program Coordinator directly to complete the internal process for approving a visit.
  3. The Academic Visitor Program Coordinator will forward an application once the communication with your host physician has met internal criteria. Complete and return the Academic Visitor application and supporting documents. (Applications must be received no later than 1 month prior to your proposed visit date. Incomplete applications or documentation will delay processing.) The application will require complete medical clearance at HSS, and this is the most important step in the application process. Early preparation of immunization history is essential.
  4. Await final approval and confirmation of your visit.
  5. Submit fee (if applicable).

What happens if I am accepted?

You will receive an email confirming your visit, along with an electronic orientation packet. Upon arrival you will receive an ID badge and access to special visitor scrubs.

How long does application processing take?

Visiting Observer: We require 1 month after receipt of all application materials and supporting documents to process your application for final approval.
Visiting Clinician: The application process can take between 6-9 months. Additionally, be mindful that your country of origin may request travel documents for exit/entry into the USA. Securing these documents may take additional time.

Is there a fee?

If you are accepted, there is a non-refundable fee of $300.00* USD per visitor, per visit for all MDs & DOs. There is a non-refundable fee of $1,000.00 USD per visitor, per visit for all MDs & DOs sponsored by industry/vendor.
*Students are exempt from this fee. Proof of student status is required.

How long may I stay?

Visiting Observer: Maximum of 2 months, although actual length of visit depends upon host availability and a 2-month visit period is not guaranteed unless your host physician(s) agree(s) to this length of time.
Visiting Clinician: Maximum of 6 months, although actual length of visit depends upon host availability.

Does HSS offer any remuneration for my visit?

There is no wage, stipend or accommodation offered to visitors.
