Psychomotor Skills Education Laboratory

The Psychomotor Skills Education Laboratory (PSEL) was established in 2000 to serve as an integral part of residency training at Hospital for Special Surgery. The PSEL simulates surgical procedures to enhance the knowledge of residents. The equipment in the PSEL is, in many instances, identical to that in Hospital for Special Surgery operating rooms, allowing residents to become familiar with the myriad of devices currently used in surgery. The procedures in the lab can be performed on cadaver specimens, which allow for the most realistic training available, or sawbones, plastic models of bones and joints. Residents and fellows find this extra training very useful to their overall medical education, helping them learn about equipment that they have not handled in the operating room.

The goals of the PSEL are to:

  • Provide state-of-the-art education to orthopaedic residents and fellows in the practice of orthopaedic surgery in all specialties
  • Provide a forum to present new surgical technologies to HSS staff
  • Integrate PSEL capabilities into web-based CME and other distance learning programs
  • Develop collaborations with industry representatives to enhance patient care in the areas of musculoskeletal medicine
