Children and Adolescent Hand and Arm (CHArm) Center at Hospital for Special Surgery is a comprehensive research, education, and treatment facility dedicated to children and adolescents with a variety of upper extremity conditions. The summer medical student will assist with data collection and literature review for the Children and Adolescent Hand and Arm (CHArm) Center Registry. The registry asks patients about their demographic information and current conditions so that we can learn more about the population being treated at the CHArm Center. We ask questions about the patient’s upper extremity condition as well as their demographic and medical information, and other related physical activities. The information is then used analyze demographics, characteristics and referral patterns of those treated at the CHArm Center and to identify participants of unspecified future projects. The student will also have the opportunity to accompany Dr. Michelle Carlson, a board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon and the Center’s director, during her clinic time and participate in our Cerebral Palsy Patient Bi-Monthly Reviews. Patient function videos are reviewed during these meetings, and surgical and non-surgical treatment options are explored in a discussion forum.
