Effect of Weight on Lower Extremity Function and Development - A Pilot Clinical Study

In this study, we hypothesize that obese pediatric patients have a higher prevalence of lower extremity orthopedic disease (and perhaps back pain) than non-obese pediatric patients.  Subjects identified as obese will have a routine screening musculoskeletal examination.  We will be performing the same physical exam measurements of age and sex matched control subjects, who will be non-obese patients.  If we can help identify the rate of orthopedic risks of pediatric obesity, we can contribute to heightened awareness, earlier diagnosis, and more successful prevention and treatment of the orthopedic complications.  Responsibilities for the medical student will be assigned on an individual basis.
